Nicor Gas is in the second stage of a two-year environmental clean-up project at the site of a former Skokie manufactured gas plant, located on property southwest of McCormick Boulevard and Oakton Street. The Skokie Park District currently leases the property from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD), as well as property to the west of the clean-up site (Skokie Sports Park).

The site has been cleared with off-site disposal of soil now in progress. The 18-acre site will be restored after excavation and backfilling are completed, likely in mid-2014.

Future plans for the property will be determined by the the Skokie Park District, which is in the early planning stages of turning the property into a beautiful new multi-use park, as a complement to the adjacent Skokie Sports Park.

Additional information about the project can be found on the Nicor project Web site. Click here for the Nicor news release.
