Keeping Skokie Safe campaign in the parks in full swing

(7.5.17) Many Cultures, One Community – Keeping Skokie Safe, the Public Safety Commission’s broad-based public safety awareness campaign, is underway again this summer.

The Community Outreach Police Substation (COPS) will be out and about in various Skokie Park District parks throughout the community on Friday and Saturdays during the late afternoons/early evenings, with National Night Out being celebrated on Tuesday, August 1, from 6-9 p.m., at Oakton Park (and in communities across America).

During the COPS vehicle park visits, police officers are in and around the vehicle to meet residents, provide COPS vehicle tours, encourage residents to form a Neighborhood Watch and hand out sweet treats and prizes (while supplies last!). From time to time, staff members from the Skokie Park District, the Village’s Health Department and Human Services Division and Skokie social service agencies and school organizations will join the COPS vehicle during the park visits. At other parks where the COPS vehicle is not stationed, police officers will walk and bike in the park area to meet and talk to neighbors. The Skokie Park District will serve hot dogs at their two remaining park visits. (See schedule below.)

The Many Cultures initiative also includes involvement from Public Works crews that are active in neighborhoods painting sign posts and curbs, trimming trees to enhance existing street lighting and more. The Property Standards Division of the Community Development Department and Police Department also participate through enforcement of the Neighborhood Integrity ordinance.

Again, save the date of Tuesday, August 1, from 6-9 p.m., for Skokie’s National Night Out at Oakton Park.
