Devonshire Aquatic Center rescue

(8.9.16) Certified lifeguards at the Skokie Park District's Devonshire Aquatic Center responded to an unresponsive 4-year old boy in approximately 3.5 feet of water at approximately 3:45 p.m. yesterday. Upon assessment the boy was not breathing and CPR was given by lifeguard staff along with oxygen until paramedics arrived.

The child began breathing on his own by the time the paramedics arrived. He was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston and then to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago for further observation. At this time he is showing good signs and doctors are monitoring his progress. At the request of the family the park district will not be releasing any information related to his medical condition.

At the time of the incident there were approximately 50 people in the facility with five certified lifeguards and one pool manager. Staffing levels at the time exceeded the requirements of the Illinois Pool Code.
