Devonshire Playhouse tackles The Fantasticks

(8.26.14) – Skokie’s Devonshire Playhouse Adult Theater will present six shows of The Fantasticks, September 13-21.

In the renowned 1960 musical, two neighboring fathers trick their children into falling in love by pretending to feud. The fathers then stage a mock abduction, so that Matt can heroically seem to save Luisa, ending the supposed feud. When the children discover the deception, they reject the arranged love match and separate. Each then gains disillusioning experiences of the real world, seen in parallel fantasy sequences. They return to each other bruised but enlightened.

The show's original off-Broadway production ran a total of 42 years and was awarded a “Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre” in 1991. It is played with a small cast and minimalist set design.

The Devonshire Playhouse is located at 4400 Greenwood St. in Skokie.
