Skokie Police responded quickly this morning to a loud explosion at the Devonshire Cultural Center and its preschool at 4400 Greenwood St.
After a building lockdown according to Skokie Park District emergency procedures, police systematically moved through the building, ultimately determining that the explosion, which echoed throughout the facility, was a blown stroller tire and not a threat. The center is now back open to the public.
“We take these potential emergencies very seriously,” said Skokie Park District executive director John Ohrlund. “Both park district staff and the Skokie Police acted immediately, following procedures by the book. Parents of children in the building were notified as soon as it was safe to do so.”
The north side cultural center houses a preschool program, arts classes, and the Devonshire Playhouse.
