The Skatium Ice Arena has been serving Skokie residents, as well as patrons from all around the northern suburbs, since 1973. The facility is in desperate need of repairs to its infrastructure in order to keep the facility operational. A portion of the equipment being updated is from the original construction in 1973 as well as some items that were replaced in 1989. The proposed new equipment will make the facility more energy efficient and the removal and replacement of the current coolant system will be much friendlier to the environment. The Skatium serves over 110,000 users each year including more than 50 hockey teams, approximately 3,000 figure skaters, and hosts an annual Ice Show with 450 participants and 2,500 spectators.
PARC (Park and Recreational Facility) grants are offered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
