At their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, the Skokie Park District Board of Commissioners acknowledged the resignation of Commissioner Mike Reid. He gave notice earlier this month stating, “It is with great sorrow that due to my health status, I have decided to resign from the Skokie Park District Board of Commissioners, effective immediately.”  

For more than 19 years, Reid –– along with current President Susan Aberman (23 years) –– has been the backbone of the Skokie Park District’s board. Reid was elected to the board of commissioners in 2005, 2011, 2017 and 2023, serving as its president eleven times and its vice-president four times. He helped oversee many of the major projects and programming changes made by the park district, including the creation of Skokie’s Backlot Bash, and the renovation of The Exploritorium, the Skatium Ice Arena, the Weber Leisure Center and its Fitness First health club, and numerous park and playground renovations. During his tenure, the Skokie Park District has been recognized as an Illinois Distinguished Accredited Agency three times. 

"With the exception of three recent meetings, in his two decades on the board Mike never missed a monthly board meeting, budget meeting or public hearing," said Aberman. "He has attended nearly every major event the park district has held, including serving as emcee for the Skokie Festival of Cultures, the Skokie Fireworks Festival, and Skokie’s Backlot Bash." 

Reid also acknowledged the three talented executive directors that served during his tenure, the professional and passionate Skokie Park District staff, and his dedicated team of board members over the years. He personally thanked fellow board member and current President Susan Aberman –– with whom he served from 2005 to 2024 –– for her guidance and leadership.

He concluded his email by stating, “Parks are such an integral and important part of a community, and I will always cherish my time on the board and the great work we did together.” 

In 2017, Reid earned master board member status from the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD). He then served as an IAPD Board Trustee, helping to provide research and education to advance hundreds of Illinois park and recreation agencies. He also served on the IAPD’s Honors and Resolutions Committee, the Research Advisory Committee and the Joint Legislative Committee. 

“The board and staff recognize and admire Mike’s commitment to parks and recreation and his consistent enthusiasm and support,” said Executive Director Michelle Tuft. “His profound love of the Skokie Park District has made Skokie a better place for all residents.”
