Free SilverSneakers® memberships for some Medicare recipients

(2.25.15) Beginning today, some local recipients of Medicare are eligible for the free SilverSneakers® program, giving them not only a free membership to the Skokie Park District’s Fitness First health club and its many free exercise classes, but also membership to more than 13,000 health clubs nationwide. 

“We are proud to serve the local Medicare population as a provider for the SilverSneakers® program,” said Jennie Bever, club manager. “Many in this group will receive all of the benefits of Fitness First membership, including signature SilverSneakers® exercise classes, beginning this spring.”

The program, run by wellness improvement company Healthways, is available to most Medicare members of the following Illinois health plan providers:

  • AARP® Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan
  • Aetna Medicare
  • BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois
  • Coventry Health Care of Illinois
  • Coventry Health Care of Missouri
  • Essence Healthcare
  • Health Alliance Medicare
  • Humana
  • UnitedHealthcare®
  • WellCare

To confirm eligibility in the SilverSneakers Fitness program, individuals may visit​. Once eligibility is confirmed, the individual should bring their SilverSneakers® card or their 16-digit Healthways ID number to Fitness First, to sign up for a free club membership.

New Fitness First/Silver Sneaker® members will also gain access to the Silver Sneaker® web portal, where they can track goals, create fitness plans, watch fitness videos, find healthy recipes, and much more.
