'Safe Parks' reward for plant theft information

(7.21.14) According to the Skokie Parks Districts' landscape supervisor Steve Ames, seven large and expensive tropical plants have been brazenly lifted from the Weber Leisure Center and from Lawler Park, all in July.

"These plants were very heavy," said Ames. "I can't imagine that fewer than two people could have possibly unearthed them, and then lifted them into a truck."

Six of the Weber plants were found missing after the weekend of July 12-13, taken from in front of the lighted message marquee at the busy corner of Gross Point and Church. In addition, Ames said, another tropical plant was stolen from Lawler Park earlier this month.

The thefts coincide with the board of commissioners' passage of the district's new "Safe Parks Ordinance" (No. 14-009), dealing with graffiti, vandalism, possession of alcohol and firearms, and a $100 reward for information leading to the conviction of any person violating the ordinance.
