Typhoon Haiyan Appeal

(11.20.13) The Skokie Park District Board of Commissioners passed a resolution of support for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan last night at their monthly public meeting, directing both park district staff and Skokie residents to the 'American Red Cross Typhoon Appeal' Web site, where they may donate to the humanitarian effort ongoing in the Philippines.

The resolution reads as follows:

Skokie Park District Board of Commissioners Resolution #13-101 offering support to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan

Whereas, the Skokie Park District is a longtime friend and partner of the local Filipino-American community, and

Whereas, Typhoon Haiyan struck the central islands of the Republic of the Philippines on November 8, 2013, and

Whereas, the super typhoon is the strongest storm ever recorded, with winds exceeding 235 miles per hour, and 

Whereas, untold thousands have lost their lives in the storm surge and subsequent flooding, and 

Whereas, according to the United Nations, more than 800,000 people have lost their homes, and

Whereas, the people representing the large Filipino community in-and-around Skokie have been impacted by the storm, with their friends and loved ones in the Philippines having suffered from Haiyan’s devastation and its aftermath, and

Whereas, after the utter devastation to the nation’s infrastructure and environment, a massive worldwide humanitarian outreach is now underway, and 

Whereas, the Skokie Park District, in pursuit of fulfilling its core value of practicing environmental stewardship, recognizes the dire need for restoring and maintaining the natural environment of the Philippines. 

Therefore Be It Resolved, that the Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the staff of the Skokie Park District, recognizes and offers its deepest empathy for the pain and suffering of the storm’s victims and their family and friends in the Philippines, and

Therefore Be It Resolved, that the Skokie Park District expresses its profound sympathy and offers its sincerest condolences to those in Skokie’s Filipino community who have lost loved ones and who have family and friends continuing to struggle in the wake of the storm, and 

Be It Further Resolved, that the Board of Commissioners directs the executive director of the Skokie Park District to bring this resolution to the district’s staff and residents through the district Web site, providing an online avenue for donations to be made to the American Red Cross Typhoon Appeal.

Resolved and Adopted in meeting duly assembled this 20th day of November 2013.
